“Your Family Band perfectly outlined how to set up a lasting, stress-free, non-homework-feeling, music habit for my son, and our whole family. I had a lot of questions - how long to practice, what to do when practicing, how frequently to practice, all kinds of stuff — and Your Family Band answered all of them. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.”

Nate Shaw is a co-founder of Brooklyn Music Factory. BMF serves over 1000 students each year right here in Brooklyn, NYC. We have one measure of success for our students and their families: Are we creating lifelong musicians?

At BMF, we offer an alternative to the typical music lesson with a game-based curriculum that inspires songwriting, and a community that supports every step of the music learning process.

We built "Your Family Band" so your family can benefit from the lessons we've learned in the last decade, and give you the confidence to start your family's musical journey the right way. We want to make sure that your kids make music a part of their lives, for the rest of their lives.

We want you to have the tools to support your children in their music lessons, even if you stopped playing music a long time ago. When you know how to build a culture of music and creativity in your home, the practice habits and joyful music making will follow.

Our sole aim at Brooklyn Music Factory is to teach our students and their families to make music a part of their life - forever. We've seen thousands of students in our 10 years of teaching here in Brooklyn, NYC and we've watched our curriculum totally transform the way our families think about music lessons. Our greatest measure of success is creating lifelong music makers.

Some encouraging words (and play spaces!!) from current Your Family Band parents

"I think ultimately what I see Your Family Band doing is removing barriers and increasing ubiquity, with the end goals of both fun and learning. I see it as providing practical tools for integrating music (in the largest possible sense) into family life. You answer so many questions, but do it in your voice, which is way more engaging and convincing than reading another blog post on the topic."

Do any of these sound familiar?

My child is starting lessons and I have no idea which gear to purchase!
There is a LOT of gear out there! We help you narrow it down with a complete list of great instruments to purchase on a controlled budget, as well as a music store checklist to build your perfect home play space!

Which type of lesson should we choose? ("Classical"? Group? Private? In home?? Music school?)
We cover different music teaching methods so you can be sure to choose the one that works best for your child. Not only do we give you a guide to which type of lesson, you'll learn the 3 questions you MUST ask when interviewing a prospective music teacher.

My child isn't motivated to practice, and we fight all the time.
Practicing can be a struggle for EVERYONE if the habit is not built in a healthy and positive way. We cover how to set a routine, how to turn practice into PLAY, and how much your child will need to practice each week.

I took music lessons as a kid, quit, and now I regret it. How can I be sure this doesn't happen to my child??
As a parent, it is ESSENTIAL to engage with your child when it comes to music lessons. Learn how to make music a commonplace activity at home, along with how to communicate with your young musician even if you don't understand the notes on the page, or you consider yourself "not musical."

Who is "Your Family Band" for?
Your Family Band is for parents looking to be more effective in supporting their kids’ music lessons. You want to make sure they are learning, having fun, and are engaged and motivated so that they will enjoy a lifetime of music making, and get to make lots of music with their kids too. Whether your child is just starting, about to start, or has taken a few years of lessons that have sort of…. fizzled out…..
Who is "Your Family Band" NOT for?
This course is NOT for parents who are looking for an easy plug & play solution, or for those who are not willing to devote a couple hours a week over the next four weeks into the musical success of their child.
